March Street in Dali


March street festival is belonging to the ethnic group that is a great festival for Bai people. That is traditional about trading and culture performance.
Dali, it is the autonomous region of Bai people, so March Street is popular and traditional festival in Dali. March Street is celebrated from March 15th in traditional Chinese lunar calendar in Diancang Mt. which west of Dali. It is holed on 5 to 7 days.

This festival related with Chinese Buddhism and religion activity. Guanyin Buddha, a lady Buddha, she battled with a bad man on that day. The local people can live a peaceful life again. They very thank to Guanyin and celebrate victory. Local people also called Guanyin market on that day. The Other legend said: long time ago, Bai people are suffering at the hands of an oppressor. He wanted to get long life and never be dying. Here is a servant beside with the oppressor. He suggested to oppressor: if you want to get long life, you’d better eat pair of eyes every day; you will get long life and never be died. Because of this reason, the bai people worried about lose themselves eyes every day. At that time, a warrior came to this place; he was very clover and brave. He wanted to help the local people to kill the oppressor and give them free. He found a good idea, he cheat the bad man to go to the foot of the Diancang Mt. suddenly, a huge dog dashed out of the grasses and jump on the bad man, the dog bitted his neck and drank out his blood ,finally the oppressor died and Bai people live on the happiness life. So local people want to remember the brave warrior, every year on 15th in third lunar month, most of bai people go to the foot of the diancang Mt. and recall that hero.

This old ethnic carnival first appeared in Tang Dynasty has a history of more than one thousand years. The activities during the festival mainly include the trading of bid cattle, herbs, special local products and daily necessities. During the festival, over a thousand local bai people dressed in festive costumes were immersed in singing and dancing, playing the dragon lantern(a traditional Chinese activity at which a group of people participating in playing a man-made “dragon”, typically on the lantern festival of the 15th day of the 1st lunar month ),lion lantern(similar to dragon lantern, people playing “lion” instead of “dragon”), dancing with drum, joining in the temple fair, jumping over fire and other traditional folk culture performance. Performers from different counties give wonderful performances in the street, staging Bai operas and playing music in the open.
Riders of different nationalities will enter the horse race.
